We have been getting ready and waiting for our first opening. The fish have been slow to move so we have been taking our time getting our buoys and lines out in stages. My daughter has been a good helper and is eager to be more involved in our operation. It is good to have her by my side.

Mel and Daughter after attaching set-net buoy to anchor in Naknek District

Last night the subsistence nets in the Naknek River were plugged with a body of fish that came into the area. It’s happening, another year is commencing! We just got back from the beach after placing the last of our gear and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game had the first regulation announcement for the Naknek River District waiting for us. We are going fishing at 5am tomorrow and I’ve got butterflies in my stomach. It’s the same feeling that I get when I am anticipating getting on my skis for the first time every year.

Yee haw! Here we go!
