When you are in the rhythm and glide of a good ski, every stride can seem like a miracle, as simple and pure as breathing. The motion is much like walking, but with extension and glide. Classical nordic skiing is a form and practice where, in order to excel, you have to find the balance point between full extension and falling. It’s a metaphor for life if you choose to see it that way. Finding the perfect moment to transfer your weight and maximize your glide before repeating the motion feels so darn good, its worth doing again.

Today was the epitome of your search. 25 fehrenheit, an extra blue kick wax, and light snow falling here in Juneau. Fresh tracks with some powder on top. It was quiet, the two of us and a few other skiers on the Eaglecrest loops. Nice. And this weekend we had a great 4H Cross Country Ski class on Mendenhall Lake with 60 kids. The backdrop of the glacier is hard to beat. Wow. We have thus approached the Perfect Stride, although it would seem wise to reserve that designation for something that is only attained in your dreams. But hey, I will go ahead and say it…Today was perfect. There, I said it!
